Khichdi – The Perfect Amalgamation of Rice and Lentils

Khichdi is a dish we regularly have for dinner on Sundays. Its a well balanced comfort food, rich in proteins and vitamins. One of the highly recommended Ayurvedic dishes, Khichdi is a perfect detoxifying meal to end a week! (And it is super easy to make!) 

Serves: 4 – 5 cup

1 cup basmati rice
3/4 cup green gram (mung) lentil
1 cup potato cut into 1/4 inch square slices
3/4 cup pea
4-5 cloves of garlic chopped into small pieces
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 table spoon red chilli chopped
2-3 tablespoon olive oil or butter or Indian Ghee
salt to taste

  1. Mix the lentils and rice and wash them 3-4 times
  2. Put the mixture in a pressure cooker and add chopped potato and peas to it
  3. Add 3 cups water and 1 and a 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
  4. Close the pressure cooker and put it on high flame
  5. After 1 whistle, turn the flame to low and let it cook for 5 – 10 minutes before turning off the flame. Do not open the cooker yet
  6. In a small sauce pan, warm olive oil. Add cumin seeds and garlic to it. After 20 seconds , add chopped red chilli to it and turn off the flame
  7. Open the pressure cooker after about 10 minutes of taking it off flame.

Serve hot with the cumin/garlic oil on top or side!
