After a ‘touristically’ fulfilling, but gastronomically unsatisfying 2 days in Selçuk near Ephesus, we were back on Istanbul streets searching for a place to bring our taste-buds back to life. After looking at a few restaurants near our hotel, we finally found this lovely looking place tucked away on a relatively quiet street in the busy neighbourhood of Nişantaşı. Just by the first look, the restaurant had a very fresh and energetic feel. We took a table in the open backyard towards the end which felt a lot more green and vibrant than the cozy interiors.
Kantin uses a lot locally produced fresh and organic ingredients and their menu varies every day (we learned later that they update the daily menu on their website). The best part is that their menu always has a wide selection of vegetarian dishes which use a lot of fresh vegetables. We ordered a Lemonade, an Aryan, Okra in Olive Oil and a Vegetable Lasagna.
Their Lemonade and Ayran are absolutely a must have when there. They were the delightlfully refreshing, as was the Okra. Served in extra virgin olive oil mixed with lemon juice and very minimal on any other spice, the Okra was a quite a nice change from my usual diet of spicy food! Lasagna, albeit a little cheesy for my taste, had a lot of fresh vegetables, which balanced the taste quite well.
Food for soul! A must try if in Isntanbul!
